JOHN2 SNOOK (WILLIAM1) was born ca 1722, and died Bef. 14 Mar 1794 in NJ1. He married (1) ELSE ROCKEFELLER ca 1750, daughter of JOHANN PIETER ROCKEFELLER. He married (2) ELIZABETH (-) 23 May 1777 in Amwell, Hunterdon Co., NJ2. Notes for JOHN SNOOK: Based on evidence from Hunterdon Co., NJ guardianship and deed records, it is believed John Snook married first Else Rockefeller, daughter of emigrant Johann Pieter Rockefeller of Somerset and Hunterdon Cos., NJ. The will of Pieter Rockefeller, Sr., written 6 Dec 1763, proved 16 Aug 1766, mentions the children (William, Ann, John and Peter) of daughter Else Snuke, deceased. Inventory was taken 11 Aug 1766. In the estate account by the executors, 23 Dec 1771, she is called Alice Snook. (NJ Lib. 12, p. 418; Lib. 14, p. 405) The Rockefeller Genealogy states Else Rockefeller was born 1727, Somerset Co., NJ. No information, including guardianship records, has been found for Snook children William and Ann. Hunterdon Co. Deed Abstract: Bk. 1, pg. 38 Mortgage deed from John Snook of Amwell, Hunterdon Co., to Peter Rockafeller and Phillip Peters, execs. of the last will of Peter Rockafeller, late of the Twp. and county aforesaid, deceased. Dated 23 Mar 1767. A lot or plantation in Amwell. Proviso: The said John Snook and his heirs or administrators pay off and fully disharge unto Peter Rockafellar or Phillip Peters or either of their execs. or assignees one bond conditional for the payment of 85 pounds, 18 shillings, 8 pence, with lawful interest for the same from the date hereof, for the use of the degatees of the estate of Peter Rockefeller, deceased; and that on or before 1 May 1771, this deed shall be void. Wits: George and Samuel Corwin. Memo: On 2 Dec 1786, the original mortgage was cancelled. In 1776, John and Peter Snook, grandchildren of Peter Rockfellor (sic), fourteen and upwards, state in their petition that "having an estate real and personal which stands in need of due care, hath made choice of John Snook to be their guardian until they are twenty one." Signed 30 Jan 1776. John was deceased by 14 Mar 1794. From the unrecorded deed (property of Frank Mounts) between Joseph Craft of Amwell, Hunterdon Co., and Catharine his wife, and John Snook, son of John, dec'd, of the same place: William Snook late of Amwell, dec'd, in his life time and at the time of his death, owned 103 acres of land in Amwell, where Elizabeth Snook now lives. William Snook died intestate and his dau. Catharine became heir to the 1/23 part of the land. For the sum of 8 pounds gold or silver money, the land was released to John Snook. His estate record, Oct. 18, 1808, names administrator William Snook, widow Hannah Snook, and children William, Johnston (2yrs 3mos), Nancy Snook (10yrs), John Snook, Charlotte Sutton, wife of David sutton,Jr., and Julian Snook, who was his daughter-in-law.

William Marts, his step-brother, was named administrator of John's property in Hunterdon County, New Jersey on Aug, 03, 1811. The bond was $2000. marts applied in the Hunterdon County Orphan's Court, August term 1811, stating the personal estate of John Snook was insuffecient to discharge the debts and expenses, and John's real estate was sold on Jan. 1, 1812 to Benjamin Johnson. The following is from an abstract of a report from Frank Mounts:

Two sons of John Snook ventured out to Ohio. William Harrison Snook in 1801 and John March Snook in 1802. (History of Warren County, Ohio by W. H. Beers & Co., Page 712) and settled in Deerfield in Warren Co., Ohio. William later returned to New Jersey to bring his father, mother, and the rest of the family to Deerfield. Unfortunately, his father died Nov. 2, 1808, shortly after arriving in Ohio. (Memoirs of the Miami Valley, Ohio Vol. III, page 206, published by Robert O. Law Co., Chicago, 1919) and all papers pertaining to his estate have either been misplaced or lost. The first reference naming some members of this family is given in Deed Book 3 Page 249, Warren Co., Ohio, where Hannah, widow of the late John Snook, and her daughters, Elizabeth Trump, Charlotte Sutton and Alice Snook, sell land to William and John M. Snook on Nov. 23, 1808. Alice Snook died in the year 1810 and her brother William Snook was appointed administrator of her estate on June 18, 1810. When Hannah Snook died her son, John M. Snook, was appointed administrator of her estate on Sep. 14, 1835. The court proceedings concerning her division of her estate (Chancery Record #6, pages 54-58, John M. Snook vs. Joab Snook & others, Warren County Court House, Lebanon, OH) reveal the names of her children and grandchildren living at the time. Her son, William Harrison Snook, died in 1827 so he was not named as heir but his children were. Hannah's heirs are given as follows:

PETER W. SNOOK, farmer, P. O., S. Lebanon, was born in Deerfield in 1810 and is a son of Capt. William Snook, a native of New Jersey, who settled in Deerfield in 1805. He was a millwright by occupation, and helped build the Wright mill, one at Gainsborough and one in Deerfield for Gen. Sutton. In the War of 1812 he received a Captain's commission. By his first wife, Abi Fields, he had three children, viz: Lowery, Peter W. and Harrison. Mrs. Snook died in 1814, and he was married to Hannah Stout (see sketch of Tarsilla Hopkins, Union Township.) He died Sept. 29, 1827, aged upwards of 50 years; was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Lebanon. Our subject has followed mechanical pursuits, and for four years boating on the Ohio river, was plying between Cincinnati and New Orleans. He was married in 1836 to Amanda Vandervoort, of Warren Co., who has borne him ten children, eight living, viz: William H., Ephriam K., Irvin, John, Lewis, Joseph, Albert and Sarah. James and Eliza deceased. James was a member of Co. B. 2nd Ohio Artillery, enlisted in 1863 and served till his death, which occurred in Knoxville, Tenn., July 11, 1865, aged 22 years. Mr. Snook owns 242 acres of excellent land, besides property in Deerfield; has been Trustee of his township two different times. William and Ellen (Steele) Vandervoort, parents of Mrs. Snook, came to Ohio from Virginia in 1808, and first settled in Cleremont Co., and soon after came to this township, in which they lived till their death, - respected and esteemed by all who knew them. He died Sept. 29, 1868, aged 83 years. She departed this life in 1839 at the age of 52 years. They were parents of ten children, viz: Maria, Paul, Amanda, Sarah, Phoebe, James, Mary, Elizabeth, Eliza and John. He was again married to Mrs. Nancy Drake. Mr. Van-

DAVID J. HOPKINS (deceased), late of South Lebanon; was born in Hopkinsville, Warren Co., in 1812, and was a son of James Hopkins, a pioneer of this county. In early life our subject learned the tailor’s trade, which he followed in South Lebanon for a number of years; in 1836, he was married to Tarcillia, daughter of Capt. William Snook, a sketch of whom appears in connection with the sketch of Peter Snook, of Hamilton Township; Mr. H., after being married, plied his trade in South Lebanon for several years, when he went to Hopkinsville, in which he resided fourteen years, when he returned to his former place of residence, Jan. 2, 1958; to Mr. and Mrs. H. ten children were born, five living, viz., James E., Nathan K., Charles A., Rinaldo and Susan; the deceased are William F., who was a member of the 35th O. V. I., served three years, and was slightly wounded in the battle of Chickamauga; was honorably discharged, and in 1865 enlisted in the Eight Regiment and belonged to Gen. Hancock’s Reserve Corps, in which he served till his death, which occurred in Washington City, Feb. 14, 1866, aged 24 years. The other deceased children of David J. Hopkins are as follows: Sarah, Webster, Myrilla and Rachel A. Mrs. H. was born in Deerfield in 1818, and is a daughter of Capt. William and Hannah (Stout) Snook, who were parents of five children, four living, viz., Tarcillia Hopkins, Malinda Crane, Jane Drake and Irvin. Mrs. H. is an exemplary member of the M. E. Church, to which she has belonged since 1840, and is a consistent Christian woman.
