Buckeye Dedication.
The Buckeye Christian Church about 5 miles northeast of Geff, will dedicate their new one-story building Sunday in all day services. Bro. Glen Wheeler will be the guest speaker and will dedicate the new structure, which will seat over 100 people. Sunday School will start at 9:15 a.m. with the worship service starting at 10:15 and a basket dinner at 12:30. The dedication services will be held at 2 p.m. The new facility has a 12 by 20 foot vestibule in the front, two restrooms, a full basement, and a complete water system by way of a drilled well. The old church, which was about 135 years old, has been razed. Everyone is invited to come! Wayne County Illinois Press Monday, June 10, 1971 Submitted by Betty Beeson ADDITIONAL INFORMATION GLEANED FROM THE WAYNE COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY SCRAPBOOK. John Clinton Ashley was born in Va in 1800. He and his family moved from Pittsburgh, PA to Ohio and he became a minister of The Disciples of Christ. For sometime prior to 1850 he became a missionary and worked in Monroe County, Ohio and the adjoining counties, organizing Disciples Churches. During this time he knew most of the people who imigrated to Illinois from Ohio——1840-1860. In 1850 he was sent to Carmi, White county, Illinois to organize churches....... Buckeye Formed Earlier John Clinton Ashley moved on to Lamard Prairie and found Buckeye had been organized in 1840 by members of Disciples. Among them were——Jessie MILNER, Isaac and Edward WHITACRE, James and Fenton LUMM, Noah TOWNS, James McNEELY, John SKELTON, James MORLAN, and Townsend RICHARDS. The BUTCHER and CANDLE families came from Tennessee. He met Ed PUCKET and others here. Lamard Prairie was sparcely settled at that time. The first building also housed a school. They called this house Buckeye, a glorious and faithful Mother and the first Disciples Church in Wayne County... Wayne County Illinois Press October 31, 1955, Pg. 2, Col. 1
